Michael Stuart is senior vice president and chief financial officer at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with $22.9 billion in annual revenue serving 4.7 million members in the state's commercial, individual, and government markets. He oversees the company’s financial strategy, actuarial functions, and financial operations.

He has over 20 years of extensive financial leadership experience within the healthcare industry spanning payer, hospital, and physician practice sectors. His breadth of expertise covers all realms of financial acumen with concentrations in integrated strategic and financial planning, performance improvement, financial reporting and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and financial controls. He is a collaborative leader with a proven track record of building high-performing teams and achieving strong results in challenging and fast-paced environments.

Prior to joining Blue Shield, Stuart served as chief financial officer for Daughters of Charity Health System for eight of his 11 years with the company. He gained formative professional experience with Deloitte & Touche as a consultant in their Solutions Consulting Group.

He actively serves as a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives, is a board member of Altais, a former board observer with Landmark Health, and served on the board of the Retirement Plan for Healthcare Employees. He is a past recipient of Modern Healthcare’s ‘Up and Comer’ Award.

Stuart earned his Master of Business Administration degree in finance, with honors, from Saint Mary’s College of California and his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from California State University, Chico.
