Getting tested
Will Blue Shield reimburse me for over-the-counter (OTC) tests?
- With the exception of Medicare Advantage and most self-funded members, if you purchased an over-the-counter (OTC) test that has been authorized for emergency use by the FDA, Blue Shield will reimburse the cost.
- To be reimbursed, the claim submitted must include:
- An itemized purchase receipt with the test name, the date of purchase, the price, and number of tests
- By submitting a claim for reimbursement, you are attesting that the self-test has not and will not be reimbursed by another source and is not for resale.
- When filing claims online, you must use a separate claim form for each receipt and for each member. (To submit a single form for multiple members and/or receipts, use a mail-in form instead.)
If you need to obtain a test ordered by your healthcare provider, it is recommended you visit an in-network testing site.
In-network testing locations include these retail pharmacies:
- CVS Pharmacies
- Rite-Aid
- Walgreens
- Quest through Walmart
- Ralphs' Clinic testing services for viral or rapid antigen tests
When using out of network providers, out of pocket costs may apply.
What are Test to Treat locations?
- At some testing sites, you can get medication for COVID-19 right away if you test positive and are eligible. These sites are called Test to Treat.
- COVID-19 medication can prevent hospitalization and death. It works best if started right away. Test to Treat is an easy way to get this medication early.
Medication and treatment options for COVID-19
The role of therapeutics in COVID-19 response has changed. This is due to the availability of highly effective oral therapeutics and simplified access to treatment as soon as someone tests positive for COVID-19.
Test to Treat facilities
A federally-supported Test to Treat facility is a location where you are able to get tested, receive a prescription for oral antivirals, and, when appropriate as determined by a healthcare provider, have a prescription filled. This is all done at one location. Test to Treat facilities can be found using the HHS Test to Treat locator or California’s My Turn website.
For more information on the Test to Treat initiative, visit aspr.hhs.gov.
