Get the care you need quickly when you're sick
Discover 6 ways to access care fast, even if your doctor is busy. Hint: You may not need to go in person.
Doctors’ offices are busier than ever these days. Sometimes it can be tough to book a timely appointment with your primary care provider. You might be sick or have a new symptom you’re concerned about. But even if your provider’s schedule is full, you still can get care quickly:
• Ask about walk-in visits
Some provider offices keep a few time slots open each day for walk-in appointments. These may be earlier or later in the day.
• Book a telehealth visit with your provider
Many practices make telehealth appointments available throughout the day in which you talk to your doctor via video or on the phone. Telehealth is a good choice for non-emergency issues.
• See your provider at a different location
Your provider may be available at a different location. It may not be as close to your home, but it may be worth going farther so you can be seen sooner.
• See another provider in the same office
Many offices have other doctors, nurse practitioners (NP), or physician’s assistants (PA) on staff. Ask if another provider can see you. NPs and PAs do exams, order lab tests, and write prescriptions. Plus, they can consult with your provider in case you need a follow-up.
Don’t delay your care
If these options don’t work out, don’t delay your care. Putting off a small problem may make it become a bigger issue down the road.
• Go to urgent care
Urgent care centers are a convenient way to get care quickly. Urgent care centers are often open late during weekdays, and most offer weekend hours. You can typically get an appointment the same day. Find an urgent care center near you.
• Book a Teladoc appointment
Get an appointment within 60 minutes with a board-certified physician from the comfort of your home. Call (800) 835-2362 (TTY: 711) to learn more or get help creating a Teladoc account. To schedule an appointment with Teladoc, log in to your Blue Shield account.
