Blue Shield of California offers internship, management and leadership programs to motivated college students and graduates who want to contribute to the transformation of health care and help fulfill our mission of providing all Californians access to high-quality health care at an affordable price.

Internships

Blue Shield of California offers a 10-week Summer Internship opportunity in which students will gain real life work experience while learning what a career at Blue Shield of California can offer.

Interns work on real-world projects and initiatives while being immersed in all aspects of our business. From interacting with senior leadership to visiting a neighborhood health clinic, interns will build a better understanding of the diversity and complexities of working in the dynamic world of health insurance.

These opportunities are available to undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing. Internships are primarily located in Oakland, El Dorado Hills and Woodland Hills in California.

Management Trainee Program

The Management Trainee Program is a 12-month rotational development program that gives college graduates real-world training, leadership skills and challenging assignments to begin a career in management. Each rotation provides experience in critical job functions that support Blue Shield's Customer Experience division. After completing the program, trainees can interview for open leadership positions at Blue Shield of California.

Note: Roles for this program are based in different Blue Shield locations, depending on business needs. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Rotations 1 and 2: Customer Care and Claims

Management Trainees will work in Customer Care and Claims to build expertise in production and quality. Trainees will get to shadow leaders and participate in team activities. Management Trainees will also lead a team project to resolve a business problem within each area.

Rotation 3:  Business Management

Working with a mentor, Management Trainees will actively support a business improvement initiative. They will learn how key performance indicators are measured and understand what actions can be taken to impact metrics.

Shield Emerging Leaders

You are passionate about making a difference for millions of people and contributing to the transformation of health care. You aspire to be a leader that others willingly follow. You strive for professional and personal growth. And you thrive in complex environments with great colleagues. If this describes you, we want you to join us in the Shield Emerging Leaders program.

The program is a two-year rotational program designed to showcase the diversity and complexities in the healthcare insurance industry, and to build the next generation of Blue Shield leaders. As a participant, you will rotate through multiple business units in roles driving our most critical projects. Depending on business needs and your strengths and experience, your rotations will touch one or more of the following lines of business:

  • Corporate (HR, Finance, External Affairs)
  • Customer Experience
  • Health Care Quality and Affordability
  • Information Technology
  • Markets (Sales and Marketing)


In addition to your rotations, you will participate in Blue Shield's leadership development curriculum, which includes self-assessment and feedback. After completing the program, Shield Emerging Leaders can interview for open management and senior management positions at Blue Shield of California.

Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program

Blue Shield of California offers a 1-year pharmacy residency program for recent PharmD graduates. The purpose of our program is to prepare residents for a career in managed care pharmacy. The program is customized based on the resident's professional goals, providing opportunities to develop a proficiency in evidence-based clinical decision making, project management, analysis, and leadership. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be prepared for a variety of clinical pharmacist roles, including drug utilization review, quality assurance and improvement, drug information, and formulary management.
